I can’t think of a better time to do a trip I’ve been eyeing for years now. It’s all part of my “Backyard Adventures” series and the timing for this couldn’t be better in protest of the recent announcement of the “Constitution Free Zones” which is anywhere within 100 miles of the border.
The trip is on the Rio Grande River starting from the last “Rock Crossing” past the last international bridge at Brownsville and heading out into the gulf, then up the coast offshore to the Brazos Santiago Jetties at South Padre Island, into the bay and finishing at my house. I’m guessing it’s a 2 day trip, maybe 3 days with “distractions”.
Because of the international nature of this trip it calls for a bit more intel and scouting just to be on the save side. I’ll have along with me my gps locator device called a Spot2 where anyone can follow along on this trip and know my position on google earth plus the rest of the track history of the trip. It also has a 911 feature that will call in the calvary if necessary. I also have a request in to a Border Patrol friend of mine to see what they can do in order to educate me or help me along the way. I just finished reading an adventure book called the Tecate Journals and I’ve contacted the author Keith Bowden for any insights he might have considering he’s done this trip before, though it’s been ten years ago now. Still, he might have some good advice.
Basically I have all the gear except for food and I have to activate my Spot2 Tracker and find a time to do this but I’m thinking the sooner the better in light of that Constitution Free Zone Announcement. If anyone has some ideas about any aspect of this trip please chime in!
